THE MUSES
A MAGAZINE OF ART, HUMOR and EDUCATION
Welcome to THE MUSES, the first user published magazine devoted to exploring
the creative possibilities of the computer. We intend this to be an
active magazine that responds quickly to the needs of our readers, offering
the highest quality images, ideas, and information.
Within our menu you will find items labeled in the following catagories.
1. Humor: an eclectic collection of odds and ends you will find perfectly
useless, save a giggle or two.
2. Articles: information on various topics, primarily about graphic
techniques, along with some tutorials.
3. Reviews: a place to get the straight stuff on hardware and software we have
found worthwhile or worthless.
4. Education: we have high hopes that this section will be an active area,
where those of you interested in using computer graphics in an educational
context will share ideas with others. We will continually seed this section
with ideas, but ask that you the reader keep the dialog going.
6. Images: a collection of high and low resolution images that you can
download. These will include works of humor and quality that we feel will
amuse and delight.
At present we are using the Apple II as our primary machine, but have plans to include others in the future.
Please browse through our sections, and tell us how you feel about THE MUSES.

THE MUSES magazine is very pleased to announce a co-operative arrangement
with APPLE CITY magazine in offering our readers the opportunity to down-
load Apple Hires images. THE MUSES thank Walt Marcinko, publisher of
APPLE CITY, and Silas Warner, who created the software that makes this
possible.
You will find the necessary decoding software to reconstruct the image in
APPLE CITY'S files. You will need the program RECEIVER, that may be found in
the Art Gallery section of APPLE CITY.
From the command level (->) type PUBLIC 113, then follow the directions to get
the file. While you are there take a look around, as APPLE CITY is one of
the best user published magazines on the Source.
Once you have saved the RECEIVER file and have EXECed and BSAVED it, you can
BRUN it and reconstruct any of the images from THE MUSES or APPLE CITY.
Just follow the instructions provided.
We assume that you have an intelligent terminal program like Data Capture or
ASCII Express that can capture the files and save them as individual text
files. Be sure to edit out any extraneous information in the file before
converting them. It is generally best to download files, then logoff to edit
and save.
Image files are text files that will seem like gibberish until decoded.
It is THE MUSES magazine's intention to provide a series of computer art works
of the highest quality. We venture into this as an exciting experiment
with you the reader/collector.

The following file is encoded data for creating a Hires Apple picture. The
decoding routine RECEIVER is available in the user published magazine APPLE
CITY, Public 113. This image was created by Tom Porett
co-editor of THE MUSES magazine. The image is offered for personal use only.

With that formality taken care of, some information about the picture. It was
created with a Versawriter tablet, and has been used by the Amdek Corp. in ads
for their line of fine color monitors. When saving the data file remember to
delete all the information THROUGH the row of asterisks! We hope you enjoy it.
